Chris Darrington: Building a Legacy in the Glass City
High School Stardom:
Christopher Magale Darrington Jr. embarked on a basketball journey that began with a resounding impact at Toledo Scott High School. Graduating in 2015 as a four-year basketball letterwinner, he left an indelible mark, earning the titles of District Player of the Year and first-team All-Ohio during his senior year. His stats reflected an all-around player, averaging an impressive 23.3 points, 6.2 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 4.0 steals per game.
Elite Scorer and Leader:
Darrington’s prowess extended beyond high school as he entered the collegiate scene at Vincennes University. As a freshman (2015-16), he showcased his versatility in 31 games with 15 starts, contributing significantly to the team’s 26-8 record. Not only did he rank second on the team with 11.7 points per game, but he also demonstrated leadership on both ends of the court with a team-high 4.4 assists per game and a stellar 1.80 assist/turnover ratio.
Elevating his game in his sophomore year (2016-17), Darrington earned first-team NJCAA Division I All-America honors at Vincennes. A pivotal figure in the Trailblazers’ 32-3 record and District XVI championship, he led in points (20.7) and assists (5.1) per game. His extraordinary scoring ability was highlighted by memorable performances, including a career-best 45-point game and a 33-point showing in the NJCAA Tournament.
Collegiate Journey Continues:
Transitioning to the University of Tennessee as a junior (2017-18), Darrington faced new challenges in the competitive SEC. Despite coming off the bench, he contributed to the Volunteers’ success with an average of 2.6 points, 0.8 assists, and 0.6 rebounds in 8.4 minutes per game. Notably, he battled through an ankle injury during the preseason, showcasing his determination on the court.
Following his time at Tennessee, Darrington played for the University of Toledo Rockets during the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons, averaging 9.4 points per game.
Glass City Wranglers Leadership:
Now a vital part of Toledo’s professional basketball scene with the Glass City Wranglers, Darrington has continued to evolve as a player and a leader. In the previous season, he averaged an impressive 30.3 points, 4.6 assists, and 4.5 rebounds, serving as both a vocal leader and leading by example. Under his guidance, the team achieved a commendable 17-9 record.
As the new season approaches, Chris Darrington stands as a testament to resilience and excellence, from his high school days to making history as the first Tennessee men’s basketball player from Ohio. His journey, marked by accolades, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to the game, is a testament to the legacy he continues to build in the heart of the Glass City.
